An essay is a type of text belonging to the category of factual texts. Typically, an essay is a reflective and relatively short work in which not only the content but also the mode of expression plays an important role. Because of the importance of stylistic elements, the essay is the closest thing to fiction. Essay writers are called essayists. The word essay comes from the French word essay assistant (to strive, to try) and originates from the Frenchman Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592), the first essayist.

There is no limit to the subject matter of an essay, which can be on any topic. However, the essay is often concerned with philosophical or social issues, art and literature.

Types of essays

Essays are divided into two sub-genres: the subjective essay and the thesis essay.

The subjective essay is a rather free-form piece of writing in which the author's opinions play a major role and which may proceed on the basis of surprising associations. The precise citation of sources is not important, and references to other works are usually used only to stimulate the author's own reflections.

A research essay aims to deal with its subject objectively and resembles a scientific paper. In general, the research problem or task is clearly stated and sources are clearly indicated, possibly with textual references and a list of references. Unlike a normal research paper, a research essay may include the author's own opinions and other personal material.

Structure of the essay

Introduction

An essay consists of paragraphs. The first paragraph is the introduction. It introduces and gives background to the topic of the essay in this site https://essayassistant.net/buy-descriptive-essay/. The introduction introduces the essay to its subject and justifies the approach to the topic.

Paragraphs

The introductory paragraph is followed by a discussion section, which discusses and elaborates on the topic of the essay. The discussion section is divided into paragraphs that deal with different parts of the topic. Depending on the essay, the paragraphs may be titled.

End of the essay

The final paragraph of the essay is a summary, which summarises the points made in the essay. The conclusion briefly summarises the essay's reflections and conclusions on the topic. The concluding paragraph may raise issues that can be taken up later in the paper.

Access

Today, the essay is widely used as a teaching tool in higher education. The essay is used at university level and is one of the cornerstones of the teaching of mother tongue in secondary schools. Such an environment often emphasises the content of the essay and the arguments it contains, to the detriment of the stylistic elements. Essays written in institutions are also often more focused in terms of the subject matter, often based on an assignment or material that the student has to draw on in the essay.

The essay is also alive outside the educational institutions. It is particularly popular among artists, writers and social critics. It allows free expression of ideas in a personal way.
